ADVERBS OF MANNER

We use adverbs of manner when we need to describe the way a certain action or event occurs. Most adverbs of manner answer the question "How?" and they are normally placed in one of the following positions :

  • before the adverb
  • after the verb
  • after the subject
    Position of adverbs of manner
    Examples
    Before the verb
    Jalil quickly grabbed his wallet and left the room.

    Question : How did Jalil grab his wallet?

    Answer : quickly


    After the verb

    The dancers performed gracefully at the cultural show.

    Question : How did the dancers perform at the cultural show?

    Answer : gracefully


    After the object

    The children ate their food quietly in the school canteen.

    Question : How did the children eat their food in the school canteen?

    Answer : quietly


    We normally form adverbs of manner by adding ly to an adjective. Examples :

    patient
    sweet
    careless
    reluctant
    slow + ly
    patient + ly
    sweet + ly
    careless + ly
    reluctant + ly
