We use adverbs of manner when we need to describe the way a certain action or event occurs. Most adverbs of manner answer the question "How?" and they are normally placed in one of the following positions :
- before the adverb
- after the verb
- after the subject
Position of adverbs of manner | Examples |
Before the verb | Jalil quickly grabbed his wallet and left the room. Question : How did Jalil grab his wallet? Answer : quickly |
After the verb | The dancers performed gracefully at the cultural show. Question : How did the dancers perform at the cultural show? Answer : gracefully |
After the object | The children ate their food quietly in the school canteen. Question : How did the children eat their food in the school canteen? Answer : quietly |
We normally form adverbs of manner by adding ly to an adjective. Examples :
